Military Base Honors Fallen Soldiers

ANCHORAGE - Dozens of soldiers and friends gathered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Thursday to remember two men killed in battle.

Nathan Davis and Vincent Ellis were deployed to Afghanistan in December with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

?While we are losing soldiers to the war, it means we're taking it to the enemy which is good. Getting out into the unpatrolled provinces and fighting the enemy where they are. That's the way we're going to win the war,? said 1st Lieutenant Luke Friese.

Davis, 20, joined the military after high school. The California native was on his first tour of duty when an improvised explosive device killed him on June 9.

Ellis, 22, called Tokyo, Japan home. He died June 4 after being wounded by enemy fire. His comrades remember him as a hero.

?He fulfilled is obligation to his leadership and to the army by being an excellent soldier and living the warrior ethos that we seek to instill in every soldier,? said Friese, who worked with Ellis in Afghanistan.

A quote from Ellis?s Facebook page shows how he wants to be remembered.

?I wear the colors because others don?t want to. I use an M-4 so others don?t have to. I wear the uniform because I want to. I?ll lay down my life so others can live.?

NASA?s Flying Fish: Riding Aboard the Super Guppy Aircraft

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. ? On Saturday (June 30), visitors to The Museum of Flight in Seattle will get an up-close look at a very unusual NASA aircraft. In fact, it?s not uncommon for air traffic controllers and even fellow pilots who spot the "Super Guppy" to ask a simple but telling question: ?What are you??

I got to find out first-hand. On Thursday, I was invited by NASA to not just tour but fly aboard the Super Guppy , a bulbous cargo plane, as it flew between air bases near Los Angeles and San Francisco. The 90-minute trip up the California coast is one I won?t soon forget, and according to the Super Guppy?s flight crew, it was a rarity ??perhaps even a first ? for a civilian reporter.

I caught up with the Super Guppy ? which is the last in a small fleet of Guppy aircraft flying after 50 years ? at March Air Reserve Base in southern California. It?s there that I met the team I?d be flying with, including flight engineers Michael Robinson and David Elliot, aircraft mechanics and loadmasters Dan Thompson, Bob Coyne and Don Myrick, and pilots Dick Clark and Greg C. ?Ray-J? Johnson.

If one of those names sounds familiar, it should. Johnson is a NASA astronaut and one of the stars of the IMAX movie ?Hubble 3D.? Before piloting the Super Guppy, he piloted space shuttle Atlantis on the fifth and final mission to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope.

Before I boarded the Guppy, I had the chance to see it take off and land. Its ?swollen? appearance ??it looks like a cartoon anthropomorphic plane that held in a massive sneeze ??is as deceptive as it is daunting. [Gallery: Soaring with Seattle's Space Shuttle Trainer]

The Guppy looks like it shouldn?t be able to fly, especially when you consider that its cargo hold, which measures 111 feet long by 25 feet wide by 25 feet high (34 by 8 by 8 meters) can carry payloads weighing upwards of 26 tons.

So when it came to take my seat, I?ll admit there was just a slight hesitation. Not that I doubted my flight crew?s skills or even the safety record of the Super Guppy, but just what it would feel like in-flight.

It didn?t help all that much seeing our payload for this leg of the Guppy?s three-day trip to Seattle sitting in the cargo hold. Inside the plane was a space shuttle. To be clear, it was just the 16,000-pound (7,300 kilograms), 28-foot (8.5 m) nose section of a shuttle mockup. Part of the Full Fuselage Trainer (FFT), the crew compartment was used to train every person who flew on the real shuttles over the span of three decades.

Now it was the FFT?s turn to fly ??and mine.

Welcome aboard

I was shown to my chair, a two-seat couch in the rear of the Guppy?s cockpit. These seats, and the seats to my left, are where the aircraft?s mechanics sit. In front of me was the flight engineer?s station and in front of that, the pilots? seats. What really caught my eye, though, was what was in front of them: windows, and a lot of them.

From outside, the sheer size and dimensions of the Super Guppy grab your attention. But inside, the panoramic, 180-degree view out the forward floor-length windows are the star attraction. The only way to get a better view of the ground would be to swing open the nose of the Guppy, which can rotate 200 degrees to load its large payloads.

From my seat at the rear of the cockpit, I had to crane my neck to see just a sliver of the action. But any thought of unbuckling my seat belt and standing up to get a better view was erased when the crew powered up the Guppy?s four turboprop engines for takeoff.

"We?re going to use most of the runway," Johnson said to his crewmates. The sudden burst of speed ? we had been taxiing for a few minutes ??pushed me back into my seat. It was a lot bumpier than a commercial airline, too. But the transition from ground to air was smooth, almost unnoticeable, and the climb to altitude was a lot slower than the commercial flight that brought me to California.

The gradual climb was a good thing, too. It gave Thompson, outfitted with knee pads and gloves, time to jump into the cargo hold to climb over and around the shuttle trainer to make sure it was still chained down and where it was supposed to be. [Images: NASA's Visions for Future Airplanes]

Once he finished, Myrick and Coyne went down into the lower cargo hold to shut the lower door that separates the unpressurized back of the plane from the pressurized cockpit.

We climbed to 14,000 feet (4,267 m), the Guppy?s cruising altitude, and were told by the tower to head out over the water for Santa Catalina Island and then head toward Los Angeles.

"There?s the Pacific Ocean, boys," said someone toward the front of the cockpit. "Ten bucks for anyone who sees a whale."

Window seat

The only cetacean in sight, however, was the flying variety. The aircraft may be called the Guppy, but it?s much more akin to a whale: large, slow-moving and possessing a voracious appetite ??for fuel.

The most frequent callout among the crewmembers was a check of the remaining fuel, for the huge Guppy burns through its reserves at a rapid pace. As such, flying west and then north was not the most efficient use of the Guppy?s gas.

Clark called the tower and requested to go to VFR ??visual flight rules ??rather than follow the out-and-about flight plan the tower had chosen. We gradually banked right and began following the coast north.

It was about this time that my view got a whole lot better. Myrick had set a small garbage pail behind Clark and offered me a seat. From here, I had a bank of windows to my right and Clark to my left. I could view both the cockpit controls and the spectacular landscapes we were passing.

Sightseeing turns out to be a good way to pass the time. Both Clark and Johnson took turns pointing out airfields, city spots and natural landmarks. This wasn?t for my benefit; it was for them. I was just happy to take advantage of their geographical skills (and the GPS running on an Apple iPad positioned between them).

We flew over John Wayne Airport in Orange County, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and the nearby Rose Bowl stadium. In the distance we could see Mount Whitney, at 14,505 feet (4,421 m) the tallest peak in the continental United States. And depending on who you talk to on the crew, we may have seen Yosemite National Park, too.

But the most memorable sight, at least to me, was the dry lakebed at Edwards Air Force Base. Clearly visible was Runway 22, the same landing strip where Johnson landed on space shuttle Atlantis in 2009. (After the flight, I asked Johnson about the differences between flying the shuttle and the Guppy. He told me the shuttle flies a lot faster but the Guppy flies a lot heavier.) [10 Military Aircraft That Never Made it Past Test Phase]

Thank you for flying

When we weren?t looking out the window, the crew focused on their flying ? and their snacks. There were ?Guppy Gummies? ??I didn?t get a good look at them so I don?t know if they were fish-shaped or not ??and beef jerky, Johnson?s favorite (he brought jerky with him to space).

I didn?t get the sense they were censoring their behavior because I was there, or because two GoPro cameras were documenting the trip for The Museum of Flight. Rather, they were a professional crew who respected the Super Guppy and were proud of their service to NASA.

The landing at Travis Air Force Base was much smoother than I expected. Make no mistake, it was still bumpy, but despite the crosswinds, the touchdown was far from jarring. You could almost forget that there was a space shuttle nose in the very large trunk. Almost.

Back on the ground, it was time for me to part ways with the Guppy. I?ll be in Seattle on Saturday, however, to see the cargo plane ??and its crew ??arrive to well-deserved fanfare. They may have been delivering a piece of space shuttle history, but their ride should enjoy a little time in the spotlight, too.

How good can the Nats get?

Top 3 pitchers are reminiscent of the 1990s Braves, and the bats are coming alive

Heading into an NL East showdown series with the Braves, the Nationals own the National League's best record.

OPINION

updated 4:45 p.m. ET June 29, 2012

Tony DeMarco

On the eve of Davey Johnson's one-year anniversary as the Washington Nationals' manager, the offense did things it never had done for him.

The Nats scored 12 runs, the most in Johnson's tenure, tied a Nationals record with 21 hits and set a record with 11 extra-base hits in a 12-5 rout of the Colorado Rockies. And then the next night, they added 11 more runs for their first back-to-back games of 11 or more runs since 2005.

"They finally started listening to me,'' Johnson joked. "It only took them a year.''

Coors Field has been the ultimate slump-buster throughout its 18-year history, and It certainly helps to run into the Rockies while their highly questionable two-tiered rotation experiment continues. But that double dose of good timing aside, there's much to smile about in the Nationals' world these days:

With the Los Angeles Dodgers' recent skid, the Nationals own the National League's best record at 43-31 through Thursday. Heading into an NL East showdown series this weekend in Atlanta, the Nationals have led the division for all but 10 days, currently by 3 1/2 games. Nobody has a better road record since last Sept. 12.

And of course, the Nationals lead the majors in team ERA, strikeouts/nine innings, runs allowed, WHIP and opponents' OPS.

And they've accomplished all of this short-handed. Every team has injuries, but key ones, like those to Michael Morse, Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth, Drew Storen and Wilson Ramos, can decimate even the deepest of rosters. Morse and Zimmerman are back, but the latter three still are missing-in-action.

"It's a testament to the depth we created in the offseason; to the scouts and player-development people,'' general manager Mike Rizzo said. "We're in first place, but we're always trying to build onto what we have. We have one of the youngest teams in baseball, and we feel we're not even scratching surface of our ability levels. We feel like we're just starting to hit on all of our cylinders.''

And to think that one year ago, Jim Riggleman walked away from the manager's job, upset that no contract extension had come his way. Maybe that extension never was going to be offered, but if there ever was a head-scratcher of a decision, Riggleman's was it.

The Nationals are 83-73 in the calendar year under Johnson, who clearly is enjoying himself in this Jack McKeon-esque renaissance. Johnson is 69, and although he speaks more softly than he used to, much of his signature bravado remains.

Forty-seven years after his major-league debut with the Baltimore Orioles, he's dead certain of his convictions, and that seems to bridge whatever generation gap exists between him and his players, the youngest of whom is 19-year-old phenom Bryce Harper.

"Davey has done everything you can do in the game,'' Rizzo said. "Terrific All-Star player, second baseman who hit 43 home runs, Gold Glove defender. He's been the manager of the year, played on a World Series champion, managed a World Series champion.

"When Davey Johnson says something, these guys listen, because he's done it. They know he's there to help them. He's willing to share his knowledge, and the guys just feed off that.''

The Coors Field-fed offensive surge has only boosted clubhouse confidence, as the Nats have busted out of a recent 3-7 stretch in which they averaged only 2.5 runs per game.

"We knew we'd come around,'' Zimmerman said. "We're too good of a team not to score runs all year long. Lucky for us, we have a really good pitching staff that has been the backbone of this team and helped us get to where we at.''

Here's how much pitching coach Steve McCatty's staff has carried the load to date: The Nats are 12th in the NL in runs scored, ahead of only the Marlins, Cubs, Padres and Pirates, yet have a +46 run differential, second only to St. Louis.

Granted, it's way early. But there are similarities to the Braves' top-three rotation dominance of the 1990s. Ace Stephen Strasburg needs no further explanation. The acquisition of Gio Gonzalez from the financially strapped Oakland A's puts Rizzo in the Executive of the Year discussion. And underrated ground-ball machine Jordan Zimmermann could be the ace of some staffs, but is the No. 3 guy here.

Unfortunately, Zimmermann also has a bit of a Matt Cain-snakebit thing going on, as he is 4-6 despite a 2.77 ERA. Wednesday's 11 runs of support skews the numbers that have him receiving one or fewer runs in six of his 15 starts this season, and in 19 of 48 starts since returning from Tommy John surgery last season.

So deep is the rotation that you can count nine starters (with Ross Detweiler, Chein-Ming Wang and Tom Gorzelanny pitching out of the bullpen, and John Lannan, who won 10 games last season, stuck in Triple-A.). That depth could prove vital if and when Strasburg's innings begin to be limited.

The target number isn't likely to exceed 180, and since he's exactly halfway there, it's quite possible that Strasburg could skip a start or two along the way, or be pushed back a day on occasion. Clinching a playoff spot early enough certainly would help, but it's a fine line that the organization will tread down the stretch.

But believe Rizzo when he says, 'we're here to win now, but we're also here to win long-term', and know that means there will be no pushing Strasburg too far.

If the Nationals seem overly skittish about innings limits, at least part of the reason why is McCatty, who is well-versed in the subject ? himself a victim of Billy Martin's abuse of the 1980-81 A's rotations.

In 1980, McCatty threw 221.2 innings including 14 in a 2-1 loss to Seattle, and four other pitchers ages 25-28 ? Rick Langford (290 innings), Mike Norris (284.1), Matt Keough (250) and Brian Kingman (211.1) ? combined to make 159 starts.

The following year, they benefited from a strike-shortened 1981 season that stopped at 109 games, but by 1984, all were either ineffective, injured or in the cases of Kingman and Norris, out of the majors.

Slowly but surely, the bats are returning to the lineup, taking pressure off the staff. Zimmerman spent time (April 21-May 7) on the disabled list due to a shoulder trouble that has limited him, and since receiving a cortisone shot on Sunday, has been on a tear that included his 1,000th career hit.

After his breakout 2011, Morse didn't play until June 2 due to a lat injury. After 23 games, he is just beginning to feel comfortable and be productive. Werth (wrist) could be back in August. So even though Rizzo reportedly made a fact-finding call to Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd about Carlos Gonzalez's potential availability (no-go for CarGo), Rizzo feels there is enough offense currently on the roster to win.

"Any team that goes extended periods without their 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup is going to struggle to score runs,'' Rizzo said. "We haven't had our 3-4-5 hitters in the same lineup all season. We're definitely anxious to see that happen. We feel confident this is a potent offense. Once we swing the bats like capable of, we feel we're going to be a very dangerous team to play.''

At least part of that confidence is due to Harper's immediate impact. He's not a center fielder long-term, and that's a spot Rizzo will have to address. But expecting anything more from a 19-year-old this season just wouldn't be right.

"As far as skill level on the field, he is as advertised,'' Rizzo said. "He's taken to all facets of the game. He's new to the outfield, and he's taken to that.

"Where he's exceeded expectation is the way he's handled himself in the clubhouse, in the community. He's been terrific. He's been a great teammate, and a guy the other guys really care about and protect.''

Washington rally brings 2,000 together in support of religious freedom

Published:

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- In prayerful celebration, more than 2,000 Catholics from all regions of the Archdiocese of Washington gathered June 24 as part of the local church's "fortnight for freedom" campaign in support of the United States' "first and most cherished freedom" -- religious liberty. The U.S. bishops dedicated June 21 to July 4 as days to encourage Catholics nationwide to focus on prayer, education and action in defense of religious freedom. For the rally, held at George Washington University's Smith Center, Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl of Washington was joined by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, Washington Auxiliary Bishop Barry C. Knestout, and dozens of priests, religious sisters and laity. The event, which included prayers, patriotic and religious hymns, as well as videos highlighting the nation's strong Catholic heritage, concluded with solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Speaking about the election of Blessed John Paul II as pope, Cardinal Wuerl recalled when he celebrated his first public Mass, the new pontiff called upon the faithful to open wide their hearts to Christ, to put aside fear and "be not afraid. The challenge, 'Be not afraid,' should move us to engage our culture, our neighbors, our family and our friends," said Cardinal Wuerl. "The call is not just for priests to preach, but for the laity to respond. The response is threefold: prayer, education and action. The most important is prayer."

Jes?s Mart?nez ?lvarez: No recorte Sra. ministra, invierta en salud infantil, es un gran negocio

');; var debugadcode = ''; document.write(debugadcode); }

Cincom Exhibits Market Leading Document Automation Solution ...

MAIDENHEAD, UK ? June 27, 2012 ? Cincom Systems demonstrated the latest release of Cincom Eloquence? at The Insurance Network Technology Conference last week in London. As the industry?s most intuitive document automation solution for customer communications, Cincom Eloquence enables insurers to easily create and deliver bespoke claims correspondence and policies, adapting them to the needs of individuals, while applying the logic of mass production to reduce costs.

The Insurance Network?s 4th Annual Technology Conference provided a forum for senior technology professionals to discuss and benchmark their future approach.

?Once more, the Insurance Network Technology Conference provided a fantastic platform for us to demonstrate Eloquence,? said Philippe Rouas, EMEA Sales Director, Cincom Document Solutions group. ?The audience was extremely receptive to seeing how Cincom Eloquence could help them create highly personalised communications that can be delivered to multiple channels, such as renewals via text messaging or short-term policies via SMS?, he added.

With an increasingly transparent and competitive market place, insurers are exploring new channels to link customers, agents, brokers and back offices. With the proliferation of smart devices and social networks, consumer buying habits and the way consumers communicate are changing. Insurers who can embrace these evolving communication channels are better placed to develop the customer satisfaction and loyalty that will bolster their growth prospects. A recent McKinsey business technology report suggested that forward-looking insurers are achieving advantages through the intensive use of technology which is facilitating new types of interactions with customers and company agents. ?Insurers have huge cross-sell and up-sell opportunities by using customer data to tailor products and offers?, commented Rouas.

With multiple touch points involved in every interaction, it is crucial that each communication is relevant, timely, consistent, accurate and delivered to the channel of choice.? ?We have a nearly 30 year history of helping insurers around the world acquire, retain and strengthen their customer relationships. Involvement in technology events such as the Insurance Network Technology Conference last week helps us stay on top of industry pain points and standards?, Rouas continued.

About Cincom Eloquence
As recognised innovators in document automation and multi-channel communications, Cincom Eloquence provides automation tools to design sophisticated document models that can be dynamically applied to all types of communications. Egypt's Islamist president-elect seeks wide support

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist President-elect Mohamed Mursi began talks on Wednesday with groups nervous about where he will take Egypt after the generals who have ruled since Hosni Mubarak's fall make way for the republic's first civilian leader.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Mursi to bring diverse groups into his government, mentioning Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, secular-minded Egyptians and young people.

The U.S. State Department played down reports that Clinton might visit Cairo this weekend, saying that she was unlikely to visit Egypt during her current trip to Europe, which is due to end on Saturday in Geneva.

Speaking at a news conference in Helsinki, Clinton stressed the importance of developing democratic institutions, including countervailing forces such as an independent judiciary and a free press.

"We hope that full democracy is understood to be more than an election," she said. "One election does not a democracy make.

"That's just the beginning of the hard work and the hard work requires pluralism, respecting the rights of minorities, independent judiciary (and) independent media..." Clinton said.

Clinton promised support for a democratic transition in Egypt, a firm U.S. ally and a recipient of billions of dollars in U.S. aid since it signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979.

"We've heard some very positive statements thus far including about respecting international obligations, which would in our view cover the peace treaty with Israel, but we have to wait and judge by what is actually done," she said.

Mursi, 60, a U.S.-trained engineer and Muslim Brotherhood insider, is expect to take his oath on Saturday, but it is uncertain where he will do so.

Parliament is the normal venue, but the constitutional court dissolved the Islamist-led lower house this month in a clear attempt to roll back the Brotherhood's electoral successes since Mubarak's overthrow in a burst of popular anger 16 months ago.

According to a government source quoted by state-run al-Ahram newspaper, the same court will swear in Mursi, but this may be unpalatable to the man who defeated a former pro-Mubarak air force chief in a run-off for the presidency this month.

The office of Egypt's president-elect Mursi said details on the swearing in ceremony would be released on Thursday.

UNEASY BEDFELLOWS

Mursi's own authority has already been circumscribed by the military, which has long viewed the Brotherhood as a peril to Egypt's secular establishment and must now cohabit with a man it fears will seek to erode its entrenched power and privilege.

The military has also asserted its right to veto the proposals of an assembly supposed to draft a new constitution, in another sign that the generals are bent on retaining a controlling grip on Egypt's future.

The army council has promised a handover of power by July 1, but no details of the ceremony have been released. The state news agency said the presidency would announce them on Thursday.

Al-Ahram said Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi would hand executive authority to Mursi in an army club on Saturday in front of the military council, the acting prime minister and his colleagues, political party leaders and foreign diplomats.

Mursi, who has promised an inclusive government, sat down with some minority Christian leaders in the first of several meetings that will involve political parties and youth groups active in the anti-Mubarak revolt, said Yasser Ali, spokesman to the president-elect.

Mursi also met 24 young campaigners who played a leading role in the uprising that toppled Mubarak, and planned to meet the heads of political parties on Thursday, Ali said.

The groups represent diverse constituencies that share fears of what the Brotherhood's Islamist agenda might mean for Egypt, a deeply religious society where political freedom was stifled for decades in Mubarak's military-backed police state.

The Brotherhood, itself banned under Mubarak, says it wants to work with other parties. It denies planning to curb social freedoms or infringe on the rights of Egypt's 10 percent Coptic Christian minority, which has long complained of discrimination.

Mursi's daunting task is to accommodate the military, reach out to his political opponents and stabilize a country shaken by months of upheaval, uncertainty and economic stress.

He must also cope with Salafi Islamists, the Brotherhood's ultra-orthodox rivals. They may have helped him to victory against his military adversary in the run-off but may now press for action on a stricter Islamist agenda.

"We are supposed to meet with the president in the next few days to assess the role of political parties in the next phase," said Emad Abdel Ghaffour, head of the Salafi Nour Party, which won nearly a quarter of the seats in the dissolved parliament.

"It will be a coalition of forces working together. Nour Party is part of this commitment," he told Reuters.

Vitor Belfort has strong feelings on shaving

Vitor Belfort missed out on the chance to fight in front of a home crowd over the weekend, as he had to pull out from his bout with Wanderlei Silva because of an injury. However, he is not going to miss on the chance to tell fellow Brazilians how to shave.

In other Belfort news, the UFC is still hoping for a fight between Belfort and Silva and they are aiming for an October show in Brazil. However, Belfort doesn't think that fight makes sense, and would rather fight Michael Bisping and then get another shot at the UFC middleweight belt. He's also open to moving to light heavyweight, and he isn't afraid of Jon Jones.

Consider this your daily Vitor Belfort briefing. You are now briefed.

Thanks, Fightlinker.

Human-powered copter breaks record with 50-sec flight

1 day

A team at the University of Maryland has blown away a long-standing (or long-hovering) record for human-powered flight. A Japanese team stayed aloft for 19 seconds in 1994, and no one has been able to do better until Thursday, when the Maryland team stayed aloft for 50 seconds. They fell just?short, however, of the 60 seconds required to qualify for a decades-old $250,000?prize.

Gamera II is the name of the helicopter the team constructed in order to claim the Sikorsky prize, created in 1980 in memory of the helicopter?pioneer Igor Sikorsky.?The contest requires that the craft reach 3 meters of altitude ? and that it stays there for a full minute.?

The newest version of the craft weighs only 71 pounds, 30 less than the previous one, which?stayed aloft for 11 seconds in 2011. Gamera II?harvests power from arm movements as well as pedals, transmitting more power to the four large rotors. These and other improvements allowed the team to break the 18-year-old record and post a time of 50 seconds in the air at 2 feet up. Watch the video of that flight below:

The team will continue to make attempts at the 60-second goal, though they would still need to go significantly higher to claim the prize money, even if they hit the minute mark. The solution is not as easy as simply pedaling harder. Gamera II takes advantage of an aerodynamic characteristic of low-altitude craft called ground effect, which reduces the energy needed to hover, and that advantage decreases the higher the craft goes.

The researchers from Maryland are not the only ones working on the problem: A private team called Atlas recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise some funding for their attempt on the Sikorsky prize. The requirements of the prize may be straightforward, but they are also extremely difficult, so chances are it will take some time and effort, not to mention money and materials, to make it happen.

PFT: Forte irked with Cutler discussing his contract

89545031_display_imageGetty Images

A year after nearly making it to the playoffs following a total of six wins in three seasons, the planets aligned for another disastrous season in St. Louis.? And a disaster indeed unfolded, in the form of a 2-14 record.

The finish resulted in owner Stan Kroenke cleaning most of the house, firing G.M. Billy Devaney and coach Steve Spagnuolo.? On Saturday, Devaney joined Doug Farrar and Rob Rang of KJR radio (via NFL.com), and Devaney offered up a wide variety of excuses for the team?s re-collapse in 2011.

The laundry list of lamentations for losing include:? (1) the team went up for sale as soon as Devaney and Spagnuolo were hired; (2) the team had ?an old roster,? a ?really old roster?; (3) there were ?some guaranteed contracts on there that we have to live with?; (4) the lineup was essentially ?Steven Jackson and the Pips,? and Devaney said he ?probably would have been happier with some of the Pips? (oh . . . snap); (5) the team had to make tough and unpopular decisions regarding receiver Torry Holt and Orlando Pace; (6) there wasn?t much money being put into a team that was for sale; (7) after a successful season, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur left to coach the Browns; (8) a ton of injuries in 2011; (9) no offseason in 2011; and (10) a ?ridiculous? schedule in 2011.

?It was just one thing after another,? Devaney said.? ?I could tell in training camp ? I mean early on, I don?t even know if we started playing a preseason game ? things just, especially on offense, things just looked really . . . nobody looked comfortable.?

Then came the regular season, with an opening slate of games against the Eagles, Giants, Ravens, Redskins, Packers, Cowboys, and Saints.? But for a postseason-altering upset win over the Saints (if New Orleans had won, the Saints would have hosted the 49ers in the divisional round), the Rams would have started the year 0-8.

?I mean, we were hoping, and this is ? we?re trying to be optimistic ? we were hoping at the halfway point, we may have had two wins,? Devaney said.? ?We thought if we could scratch out two wins, the back end of the schedule, we could win a couple of more games.? Well, I don?t know if we won any.? We may have won one, but by that time, the roster was decimated.? We were working corners out on Tuesday and they were lining up and starting for us on Sunday. . . .? Five or six of those guys, I couldn?t even tell you who they were.?

The points are all valid, but the lesson for other General Managers and coaches is that, when a team is facing that kind of adversity, it?s important to manage expectations, both inside and outside the building.

It didn?t work internally, or Devaney and Spagnuolo would have gotten another chance to preside over another stunning turnaround.

Facebook signs mobile apps privacy agreement

Published: Jun 22, 2012 at 2:10 PM PDT
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Facebook became the seventh company to agree to give people advance warning if its mobile applications pull personal information from mobile phones and tablet computers.

California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris said Friday that the agreement includes Facebook's own applications, as well as those made by third parties in its recently-launched App Center.

The agreement requires mobile apps seeking to collect personal information to display their privacy policies before their app is installed on a device.

Facebook says it incorporated the principles of the privacy agreement when it was designing its App Center.

The other six companies are Apple Inc., Google Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp., Research in Motion Ltd. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Residents call for renewed restaurant at Cedar Hill golf course

Fluorescent pink, purple and green Post-it notes cover the beige walls that overlook the Cedar Hill golf course. Scrawled on each one is an idea or suggestion from a Saanichite, intent on seeing the clubhouse thrive and survive.

"Today is all about letting you have a say in what you want to see," Jae Cooper, managing partner of Elevate Consulting, tells a group of residents.

Saanich hired the consultant firm as part of a recommendation from council in February that followed a series of heated meetings on the golf course and clubhouse's $820,000 deficit for 2012.

While council made an in-camera decision in January to close the second-floor restaurant to save money, councillors felt what becomes of that space should be up to their constituents.

"It's obvious everybody still wants a restaurant," Saanich resident Cathy Ruszel says to an Elevate consultant after perusing the Post-it note suggestions, most of which called for reopening the restaurant, "and you're going to say that to council, and they're not going to OK that."

Ruszel attended the Wednesday (June 20) open house at the golf course, along with another 150-or-so interested parties.

Saanich parks and recreation director, Doug Henderson, acknowledges that council could hear the direction of residents' input, but stick with the status quo.

"Returning to what we had before, in terms of a full service operation restaurant, that's not something being considered. I don't think that rules out that there's some type of food service," he said.

"All the input we get will be reflected, but whatever finally is determined has to fit ? in the context of the deficit reduction strategy and restructured food and beverage operations."

Henderson says the municipality can't contract out the space to a private food service provider, as there are successor rights for past unionized restaurant employees under the B.C. Labour Relations Code.

"You can't just close a service down for a year or two years, pop it open again and say, 'Oh well, we haven't done it for a while. And now (it's different because) it's contracted out,'" the parks and rec director said.

In a document the News obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, Saanich sought advice from two consultants on its best options, prior to the Jan. 12 decision to close the restaurant. Both advised that Saanich should seriously consider shutting it down.

"Given the current cost (wage and benefits) structure (at the Cedar Hill restaurant) the likelihood of this turning a gross profit sufficient to sustain operations in the future is very minimal," says the report, paraphrasing Frank Bouree from Chemistry Consulting.

"If contracting out of the restaurant service is not a viable alternative to reduce costs, serious consideration should be given to reducing the service, while protecting the grab and run operation ?," the report reads, paraphrasing Ryan Crook with TruStar Golf Inc.

A Saanich staff report from last December had suggested keeping the restaurant open during the summer and Christmas, but council ultimately voted to close it to keep a lid on tax increases.

Henderson expects the summarized results of Wednesday's Elevate consultation to be in by the end of July. He wants to see a report before council sometime in August.

Individuals who did not attend the meeting and would like to provide their feedback have an opportunity to fill out an online survey until July 5. That questionnaire can be found at saanich.ca/chgc.

Regular exercise may boost lung transplant patients' heart health ...

Cardiovascular Medicine, Health and Fitness, Transplants Lia Steakley on June 22nd, 2012

As reported in a previous Stanford Hospital & Clinics story, recent research has shown that exercising as soon as a few weeks after a transplant operation may improve patients? longevity.

Now findings published yesterday in the American Journal of Transplantation offer additional evidence that transplant patients who participate in supervised fitness programs following their discharge from the hospital may improve their quality of life and overall health.

In the small study (subscription required), Belgian researchers randomly assigned patients who had not experienced complications after single or double lung transplants to participate in either a control group or a three-month exercise initiative. Volunteers in the control group took part in daily mobility exercises, such as walking and stair climbing, in a hospital setting for roughly six week. Individuals in the exercise group engaged in 90-minute training sessions three times a week. According to a journal release:

The authors compared daily walking, physical fitness, quality of life and ill health from cardiovascular disease between the two groups. This included monitoring their blood pressure during normal activities over a 24-hour period.

Key findings included:

  • One year after hospital discharge 18 patients remained in the intervention group, with 16 in the control group. Five patients were lost to severe medical complications and one was unwilling to continue.
  • After a year, the patients in the intervention group were walking an average of 85 minutes a day (plus or minus 27 minutes), while the control group was walking an average of 54 minutes a day (plus or minus 30 minutes).
  • Quadriceps muscle force, how far the patients could walk in six minutes and self-reported physical functioning were significantly higher in the patients who exercised.
  • Average 24-hour diastolic and systolic blood pressure was significantly lower in the treated patients.

?The patients who took part in the exercise program engaged in more physical activity in the first year following hospital discharge, which in turn resulted in favorable health outcomes. They achieved better physical fitness against a number of key measures, reported better physical functioning and had lower blood pressure and better cardiovascular health than the patients in the control group.

TJ’s Schneider named Daily News baseball player of the year

Greg Schneider had more expectations thrust upon him than any baseball player in Thomas Jefferson history.

Not only was the Pitt recruit supposed to be virtually unhittable on the mound, it was a foregone conclusion that he would do a ton of damage at the plate and take the Jaguars to heights the program had never seen.

Needless to say, the 2012 Daily News baseball player of the year did that and more.

Schneider had a season for the ages as the Thomas Jefferson senior went 9-2 on the mound with one save in 13 appearances, 12 starts, and his only no-decision came after he threw nine shutout innings in a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals playoff game against Hampton.

?Over the last four years he matured into a great baseball player and a really awesome young man,? Thomas Jefferson coach Rich Krivanek said. ?Just watching how he handles himself through everything, because it just seemed like every day somebody else was calling about Greg, and he just didn?t get caught up in everything and just really focused on his teammates and what he can control.?

Schneider, who was expected to be chosen in the middle rounds of this year?s Major League Baseball Entry Draft but was never taken, lost twice in the postseason to Blackhawk; the first in a 1-0, nine-inning affair in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals when the winning run scored on an error and the other, a 6-1 defeat in the PIAA quarterfinals in which Schneider was touched up for three earned runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Heading into that game he had surrendered only six runs ? two earned ? in 751?3 innings. He finished the season with 140 strikeouts in 812?3 innings, walked only 23, surrendered 39 hits and had a WHIP of 0.76.

Schneider also set a school record when he struck out 18 against West Mifflin in a 5-1 victory over West Mifflin on April 20.

If that weren?t enough, he also hit .514 with eight doubles, six triples, four homers and 30 RBI in only 87 plate appearances.

?It didn?t bother me not getting drafted, and overall the season was pretty good to start off with, but in the playoffs it got a little rough, and it could have gone a lot better,? Schneider said. ?Losing to Blackhawk (twice), that was really hard because we worked really hard to be where we were and to get that far and just lose was tough.?

Though what Schneider did on the mound and at the plate was impressive in leading Thomas Jefferson (17-6) into the state playoffs for the first time, it was how he did it that showed the presence he needs to be a top-flight collegiate pitcher. Every time he pitched, there were scouts in the stands, JUGS guns in hand, checking his velocity to see if he had what it took to be a Division I or professional prospect.

?It was hard. I liked it, but at the same time I?m not the only one out there doing things,? Schneider said. ?It was a whole team effort and there were a lot of guys that should have gotten credit for what we did this season. Other guys should have been recognized as well.?

Schneider can?t afford to slow down after a tremendous senior season. Even though he wasn?t taken in the draft this year, he could still impress the scouts during his collegiate years, especially now that Pitt will be competing in a tougher baseball conference once it officially begins play in the ACC.

?He?s never satisfied,? Krivanek said. ?A lot of kids would be happy with what he did, but I don?t see that in him. He?s a great player, he wants to get better and he sees himself playing in the majors someday.?
