ST. LOUIS -- A $4.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health will allow the physical therapy program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis to continue a training program for occupational and physical therapists that began in 2007.
The five-year grant, through the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will allow therapists to study and research different rehabilitation approaches, according to the St. Louis Business Journal. Applicants will work with two mentors, either an occupational or physical therapist and one from a different discipline, to further explore different approaches to therapy.
"So far, six of the 17 scholars have earned individual grants from the NIH. We look forward to the continued success of our scholars with the ultimate goal of helping them launch research that will improve the lives of people with disabilities," Michael Mueller, Washington University professor of physical therapy, said in a statement.
Mueller is principal investigator of the Washington University-based multicenter grant, called the Comprehensive Opportunities for Rehabilitation Research Training (CORRT).
