Notebook: Hood makes Barber the youngest coach in Division III lacrosse

Frederick native Brad Barber has been promoted to head coach of the Hood men?s lacrosse program, making the 23-year-old the youngest head lacrosse coach in NCAA Division III, the school announced Wednesday.

Barber served as a graduate assistant for the Blazers the past two seasons after completing his playing career at Division I Robert Morris. Hood?s 2013 squad set a school record for faceoff percentage and produced the program?s first two all-conference selections.

Barber, the eighth head coach in program history at Hood, passes Olivet's Adam Hague for the distinction of youngest head coach in Division III men?s lacrosse. Hague, one of three other men?s lacrosse coaches at the level under 25, is 24 years old.

In high school, Barber was a four-year starter for Tuscarora High in Frederick. He continued his career as a reserve on defense at Robert Morris, where he contributed to the growing success of the Colonials' program. In 2011, the Colonials posted a record of 9-7 and advanced to the inaugural Northeast Conference tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Barber has been involved in the lacrosse community, giving private lessons and volunteering with the Western Maryland Youth Lacrosse organization. He also has coached with many high school-level club programs. Most recently, Barber was a speaker at the 2013 US Lacrosse Convention, where he talked to more than 150 youth and high school coaches about team and individual defense.

In 2012, he established the Maryland Lacrosse Showcase in Frederick, one of the largest recruiting events of its kind on the East Coast. Going into its second year, the showcase has attracted more than 550 athletes from 37 states, five Canadian provinces and Europe.

Barber has also developed one of the largest club programs in Western Maryland for high school athletes, attracting players from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and all regions of Maryland.?
