I recently had lunch with an old college friend and her husband, an Australian. I hadn?t seen this friend in about sixteen years, but she and her husband are planning to relocate from Sydney to the U.S. soon. One of the logistical items they?re concerned about, however, is health insurance. In Australia there?s a nationalized health system, which, as it happens, she and her husband are very fond of.
Last week on Yahoo Answers, we took a question from someone in a similar situation: a young woman with dual American and Irish citizenship who is planning to move to Pennsylvania. Like Australia, the Republic of Ireland has a nationalized health system. It?s possible to buy additional health insurance on top of the coverage provided by the government, but not many people do.
So, how do you find the right health insurance coverage when you?re moving to the United States?
The eHealthInsurance reply was chosen as Best Answer:
Unless you?re getting a job and can enroll in employer-sponsored coverage, you?ll want to purchase a plan on your own. Work with a licensed agent online or in your area to see what?s available and find the best match for your needs. It doesn?t cost anything extra to work with an agent.
Depending on your health status, you may have quite a bit to choose from. It?s hard to make a specific recommendation, however, since it?s such a personal decision. What kind of health insurance benefits are most important to you? What can you afford by way of a monthly premium? Or an annual deductible? Do you take prescription drugs on a regular basis? These are some of the questions you need to consider.
