Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community ? Vectrex ...

In 1982, many of the main video game consoles and their developers, were trying very hard to get games to look just as good as they did in the arcades. In many cases, it wasn?t until the ColecoVision was released that near arcade graphics were available for home use for the first time. But a little company called Milton Bradley tried a new approach, and brought vector style graphics to the home with a new console called Vectrex. These were the kinds of graphics that were used in many early arcade titles like Asteroids. Some say, that took people backward instead of forward, but today, it is a well sought out, and somewhat expensive system to collect for. Wouldn?t it be great if there was a way to enjoy the games of the system, without the expensive start up? It looks like it could be coming soon!

It has been announced that a company called ?Rantmedia Games? was in the process of developing a new app for the iOS mobile operating systems, entitled ?Vectrex Regeneration?. The plans are, to have the application incorporate every official released title (and possibly some home brews) ever published for the Vectrex, available in the palms of your hands! The press kit is claiming that most of the games will be made available at no extra cost (unlike some apps that allow a free download and then having to buy each game separately), but have some new home brews be purchasable as a package. They also claim that iCade ability for the iPad will be incorporated for a more authentic way of playing the games. (I think that would be great, since I can?t see the touch screen format working as well for games like this.) Also, planned compatibility with AirPlay, to play the games on an actual TV set if so desired. No word just yet of any 3D emulation on games that used the Vectrex 3D Imager. They are also working on having online leader boards as a fresh update, without sacrificing the classic feel of the original. The official press kit also has this to say:

?Rantmedia Games is an indie games developer with a passion for retro. We have obtained an exclusive international license of the Vectrex brand in his applications including games and merchandising. We are creating a new app, code named Vectrex Regeneration that is totally authentic, yet updated with many fantastic features current gamers expect.?

According to their official Twitter feed, they have as of today, officially reached their $50,000 funding goal, so it is looking like it is full speed ahead at this point! The Twitter feed is also confirming that the original overlays for all of the games will be incorporated into the final product! (Of course, if you want to play without them for some weird reason, you can turn them off.) Currently, there is no scheduled release date for the app, but they have available a full website with information (where you can download the official press kit), as well as a Twitter feed as I said earlier, where you can get the most up to date information. If you have always wanted to dabble with the Vectrex, but didn?t have the money to get one, (Vectrex systems have been known for being rather pricey when bought used these days), this may be a nice alternative!

Rantmedia Games is a company born out of Rantmedia: A specialist app agency creating apps since 2008 for a number of international brands including Jaguar Land Rover and Confused.com.
