SALISBURY ? A former Catawba College soccer coach is charged with sex offenses with a child. The charges are a result of an investigation into allegations that go back to the 1980s.
The Rowan County Sheriff's Office says Ralph Wager, 69, had inappropriate sexual contact with a child under the age of 10 while he was a coach at the school. They say Wager now lives in Charlotte and works with the South Charlotte Soccer Association.
?
"When there's a hurt one place in the big body it hurts us all," said Tonia Black-Gold, Communications Officer for Catawba College.
?
Wager was arrested late Tuesday night at his home in Charlotte by Rowan County Sheriff?s Deputies. The arrest was the culmination of a three month investigation with SBI and CMPD.
?
"The victim of the crimes was also on campus, not associated with the soccer program, but was on campus at that time," said Capt. John Sifford with the Rowan County Sheriff?s Office.
?
Wager coached the Catawba Indians between 1983 and 1990 leading them to several championships. Many of his players even went on to play professionally and he was inducted in the college's hall of fame in 2008.
?
After leaving the program in 1990, Wager began coaching at the Steele Creek Soccer Club in South Charlotte. The club removed Wager's coaching record from their website Wednesday morning.
?
"As far as additional victims, certainly our office is not sure at this point," said Sifford.
???????????
Black-Gold said there is certainly concern there were other victims, and the college may choose to do its own internal investigation.
?
"It breaks our heart and our heart goes out to the victim," said Black-Gold.
?
Wager made his first court appearance Wednesday morning. At this point in this investigation, deputies said they do not believe any of the abuse happened on campus. However, they say the investigation is ongoing.
?
Wager is charged with three counts of first-degree sex offense with a child, three counts of crimes against nature, and three counts of indecent liberties with a child.
?
Any other potential victims or anyone with more information on this case can contact detectives at 704-216-8739.
