This is kind of embarrassing: when I read about Hostess going bankrupt on Friday afternoon, I wasn?t more than four or five sentences into the story until I skipped over to Amazon to check on stock. I?m not a Twinkies fan, but I wouldn?t mind selling them on eBay. Sure enough, just about everything was bought up except for some lone 8-pack Cherry Fruit Pies.

My loss. Much more importantly, Hostess?s ? and its 18,500 employees? ? loss. Earlier this year, in January, Hostess made its second trip to the bankruptcy courts (the company had already filed for Chapter 11 in 2004). But now, bankruptcy is here to stay.

The Final Straw (and Twinkie)

Executive leadership is blaming the on-going baker?s union strike as the straw that broke the camel?s back on Thursday night. Union workers held out against Hostess?s demands, which are summarized as:

• 8% cut in pay
• 20% increase in healthcare costs
• 10-12 plant closures
• New pension and workday provisions

By no means a ?good deal? from the employee perspective. When union workers refused to acquiesce, Hostess announced that Twinkies baked on Thursday evening (November 15) would be the last they ever baked? at least until another company buys the brand later on down the road.

Why You Will Eat Twinkies Again

If just one more Twinkie is what you desire in life, then so it will be. While this closure is obviously upsetting to the market and the 18,500 employees who are affected, this story won?t be the last we ever hear about Twinkies.

As an iconic brand, Hostess has value. As a stubborn brand that has remained virtually unchanged since it was created in 1930, Hostess was doomed for a painful, bankrupt death. Though we don?t yet know the details of the Hostess financial situation, I have a sneaking suspicion that disillusioned management assumed they could continue on with the same product and the same marketing strategy and achieve the same past results.

As one Slate reader pointed out, like Kodak in the shift from film to digital, Hostess didn?t grab onto the next wave ? despite its long anticipated arrival. The wave I?m talking about? Increased health-consciousness.

From Michelle Obama?s (albeit unpopular) school lunch plan to Whole Foods? staggering growth, there?s little argument that healthy eating is at the forefront of many Americans? minds. Add to this trend the fact that the Twinkie is the scapegoat pointed to any time someone needs an example of unhealthy food, and it?s easy to see why Hostess?s general resistance to change put them on the road to bankruptcy.

Okay, but I said I think we all will be eating Twinkies again (Let me tag that with the phrase: ?should we so desire.?). Here?s why?

The Hostess Potential

Hostess has an enormous amount of clout in America and abroad. While the current fatty, nutrient-void versions of their top selling products aren?t likely to reclaim the success of decades past, all hope is not lost.

With the right kind of marketing and forward-thinking leadership, Hostess could be back in the snack food game. Here?s what I think the future owners of the company need to do:

• Reclaim the brand?s status as an iconic snack/dessert, drawing on vintage advertising campaigns of the past for inspiration.
• Emphasize products as special treat/dessert ? not snack fuel to be inhaled between truck stops.
• Focus on increasing health attributes while not compromising product appearance or taste.

With these branding strategies at play, the Twinkie doesn?t just have a chance of making a comeback; it could come back with a vengeance! (If you can say that about Twinkies.) Of course, better union relationships and new organizational/restructuring strategies need to be implemented, as well.

Lastly, I know you?re wondering how long a Twinkie will last as you fill up your pantry with the remaining stock. The answer is 25 days.

New model reveals how huddling penguins share heat fairly

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? Penguins that face the bitter cold and icy winds of Antarctica often huddle together in large groups for warmth during storms. Mathematicians at the University of California, Merced created a model of penguin huddles that assumes each penguin aims solely to minimize its own heat loss. Surprisingly, the model reveals that such self-centered behavior results in an equitable sharing of heat.

The results are published in the online journal PLOS ONE and the researchers will discuss their findings at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society's (APS) Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD), held Nov. 18 -- 20 in San Diego, Calif.

Penguins aren't a typical study subject for Francois Blanchette, an applied mathematician at UC Merced who focuses on fluid dynamics. However, after seeing penguin huddles in the movie "The March of the Penguins" Blanchette realized that the important factors that shaped the huddle, including wind and heat flow, fell within his area of expertise.

Blanchette and his fellow researchers, Arnold Kim and Aaron Waters, modeled huddles packed so tightly that only the penguins on the outside could move. Each penguin in the huddle generated heat that the wind blew away. By considering such factors as the number of penguins in the huddle and the strength and turbulence of the wind, the model calculated which penguin on the outside of the huddle was coldest. The coldest penguin moved to the most sheltered spot available, usually relocating from a windward to a leeward position, and then the heat distribution around the huddle was recalculated. Repeated iterations showed the huddle gradually elongating and creeping downwind over time.

At first the model assumed perfectly steady wind patterns and identical penguins, but produced huddle shapes that were longer and thinner than those observed in nature. When the researchers added uncertainty, which could represent irregular wind eddies and natural differences in the size and cold tolerance of individual penguins, the modeled huddles closely matched real huddles.

The researchers were surprised the model showed the penguins shared warmth nearly equally among themselves. "Even if penguins are only selfish, only trying to find the best spot for themselves and not thinking about their community, there is still equality in the amount of time that each penguin spends exposed to the wind," says Blanchette. Not all instances of selfish behavior result in such fair outcomes, he notes. "A penguin huddle is a self-sufficient system in which the animals rely on each other for shelter, and I think that is what makes it fair. If you have some kind of obstacle, like a wall, then I think it would stop being fair," Blanchette says.

Currently the researchers would like feedback from biologists before they further refine the model. Gathering experimental data, however, is difficult. "Penguins huddle during blizzards, when the conditions are horrible, and if you're going to collect data you're also going to be in a blizzard in horrible conditions," Blanchette points out. The mathematicians hope their work might serve as a guide for scientists in the field, helping them to know which observations to make to test the model.

Blanchette says his group may also investigate how to adapt the model to describe other biological organisms, such as certain bacteria, that move as a group in response to an outside stimulus like food or the presence of a toxin. Eventually, concepts from the model may guide the design of swarming robots that shelter each other in harsh conditions. But for now Blanchette is enjoying a more immediate side benefit of the research: "Nearly everybody seems to love penguins and not enough people love math," he says. "If we use math to study penguins we could potentially teach more people to love math too!"

Updated at 5:40 a.m. ET: Divers found a body Saturday evening below the oil platform that caught fire after an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, the Coast Guard and an official of the company that owns the rig said.

Black Elk Energy President and CEO John Hoffman told reporters in Houston that a body was spotted on the sea floor by a dive team hired by the company to supplement the Coast Guard search for two workers missing after an explosion and fire wracked the rig on Friday.

"Divers will continue to search for the second missing worker," Hoffman wrote in an email. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families."?

Hoffman said the body was found close to the leg of the platform, near where the explosion occurred, in about 30 feet of water. He said the missing men were employees of oilfield contractor Grand Isle Shipyard.?

Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Vega told The Associated Press that the Coast Guard was turning over the remains to local authorities.

Earlier Saturday, the Coast Guard called off the search for the two workers. Three helicopter crews, a Coast Guard cutter and a fixed-wing aircraft crew had searched a 1,400-square-mile area around the platform, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Coast Guard searches for 2 missing after Gulf oil rig blast

Coast Guard Capt. Peter Gautier said initial reports suggested that the explosion occurred when maintenance workers using a torch cut into a pipe with oil inside. Twenty-two people were on board the rig when the fire broke out and unleashed a black plume of smoke. Eleven workers were evacuated and nine others were taken by helicopter to hospitals.

Four workers airlifted to Louisiana's West Jefferson Medical Center suffered second- and third-degree burns to large parts of their bodies, said Taslin Alfonzo, a hospital spokeswoman.

The incident occurred a day after oil giant BP agreed to pay a record $4.5 billion in penalties for its role in the 2010 Gulf oil spill that killed 11 workers and spewed 4.9 million barrels of oil.

Since the Black Elk-operated rig was offline at the time of the fire, there was little risk of a major oil spill, officials said.

Eleven people were injured in the production platform blast and oil spillage was minimal, according to the Coast Guard. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The platform sits in 56 feet of water some 17 miles south of Grand Isle, La., and production had been shut down since mid-August, Black Elk said.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which enforces offshore drilling regulations, is investigating the fire.

The fire was extinguished a few hours after the blast and Coast Guard Capt. Ed Cubanski told reporters that the platform appeared to be structurally sound. Twenty-two people had been aboard the rig at the time of the accident.

The platform is a shallow-water production platform, unlike?BP's Macondo well, which blew out in 2010?in mile-deep water.?The Macondo explosion killed 11 workers and caused the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

The owner of the platform is Houston-based Black Elk Energy. On its website, the company stated that this month it was starting to drill the first of 23 new wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

Last Sunday,?The Houston Chronicle named Black Elk Energy?one of the top small businesses to work for in Houston based on employee surveys.

In August, the oil and gas company was named one of the fastest-growing privately held companies by Inc. Magazine.?
