I love doing simple things that help my family save money, get the kids thinking creatively and help the community and environment out at the same time! When you can combine all three of those factors, you?ve got a winning situation! We are in the long term process of switching all our light bulbs over to Energy Smart light bulbs. But since the bulbs tend to be a bit more expensive up front, we only change out the bulbs as the old ones are going out. This week it was time to make a change on our living room lamp and was the opportunity I was looking for to have some creative, teachable moments with the kids and help our school resource at the same time. We were going to Save Money Share Light!

I headed to Walmart to find a replacement energy smart light bulb. I had no problem finding them ? The Dr. Seuss Lorax was on a big aisle display! There were so many choices. I did some research on the GE Lighting website so I was prepared when I got there. There?s even a coupon on their site for $1.00 off any GE Reveal Product. I decided on the Mini Spirals for my lamp. While in that aisle, I saw that GE also has some LED plug in nightlights. We usually leave the bathroom light on for the kids at night. By switching to a small LED night light, I can save the energy and cost of 5 bathroom mirror lights!

To get the kids excited and energized about the switch and savings, I decided that they would have fun doing a display board to show their results and even donate some Energy Smart Bulbs to our Resource Center at School. So I headed over to the craft aisles. I looked through the poster boards but decided that one of the Elmer Tri-Fold Display Boards would be more sturdy and work better. Then it would be easy to share with our School Resource Department. There?s no sense in keeping all the knowledge to ourselves. Why not share?

The kids went to work displaying a board to showcase their knowledge of how just replacing two lightbulbs with Energy We learned that Smart Bulbs can save a more than $20 for the year, in addition to giving the same CO2 benefit of planting more than 3 million trees.

My kids were proud of their finished product.

We took our display board, the lightbulbs, a bag of school supplies and some boxed foods. Our school resource center works with our special skills class. They use several lamps to keep the lighting soft so the kids stay focused. Right now they use traditional light bulbs. With the transition to the GE Energy Smart light bulbs, our school will be able to save money and be more energy efficient.

NASA spacecraft sees huge burp at Saturn after large storm

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? NASA's Cassini spacecraft has tracked the aftermath of a rare massive storm on Saturn. Data reveal record-setting disturbances in the planet's upper atmosphere long after the visible signs of the storm abated, in addition to an indication the storm was more forceful than scientists previously thought.

Data from Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument revealed the storm's powerful discharge sent the temperature in Saturn's stratosphere soaring 150 degrees Fahrenheit (83 kelvins) above normal. At the same time, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., detected a huge increase in the amount of ethylene gas, the origin of which is a mystery. Ethylene, an odorless, colorless gas, isn't typically observed on Saturn. On Earth, it is created by natural and human-made sources.

Goddard scientists describe the unprecedented belch of energy in a paper to be published in the Nov. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

"This temperature spike is so extreme it's almost unbelievable, especially in this part of Saturn's atmosphere, which typically is very stable," said Brigette Hesman, the study's lead author and a University of Maryland scientist who works at Goddard. "To get a temperature change of the same scale on Earth, you'd be going from the depths of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert."

First detected by Cassini in Saturn's northern hemisphere on Dec. 5, 2010, the storm grew so large that an equivalent storm on Earth would blanket most of North America from north to south and wrap around our planet many times. This type of giant disturbance on Saturn typically occurs every 30 Earth years, or once every Saturn year.

Not only was this the first storm of its kind to be studied by a spacecraft in orbit around the planet, but it was the first to be observed at thermal infrared wavelengths. Infrared data from CIRS allowed scientists to take the temperature of Saturn's atmosphere and to track phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.

Temperature measurements by CIRS, first published in May 2011, revealed two unusual beacons of warmer-than-normal air shining brightly in the stratosphere. These indicated a massive release of energy into the atmosphere. After the visible signs of the storm started to fade, CIRS data revealed the two beacons had merged. The temperature of this combined air mass shot up to more than minus 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 220 kelvins).

According to Hesman, the huge spike of ethylene generated at the same time peaked with 100 times more ethylene than scientists thought possible for Saturn. Goddard scientists confirmed the release of the gas using the Celeste spectrometer mounted on the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.

The team still is exploring the origin of the ethylene, but has ruled out a large reservoir deep in the atmosphere.

"We've really never been able to see ethylene on Saturn before, so this was a complete surprise," said Goddard's Michael Flasar, the CIRS team lead.

A complementary paper led by Cassini team associate Leigh Fletcher of Oxford University, England, describes how the two stratospheric beacons merged to become the largest and hottest stratospheric vortex ever detected in our solar system. Initially, it was larger than Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

Their paper in the journal Icarus, which combines CIRS data with additional infrared images from other Earth-based telescopes, including NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also reports a powerful collar of clockwise winds -- encompassing a bizarre soup of gases -- around the vortex.

"These studies will give us new insight into some of the photochemical processes at work in the stratospheres of Saturn, other giants in our solar system, and beyond," said Scott Edgington, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Hesman's work was funded in part by NASA's Planetary Astronomy Program in Washington. The CIRS instrument and Celeste spectrometer were built at Goddard.

Syrian toddler thought dead reunited with parents

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? A two-year-old Syrian boy who was believed dead after his family inadvertently left him behind as they fled shelling in Damascus last summer has been reunited with his parents in Cyprus, a lawyer said Friday.

No one knows exactly how long little Bushr Al Tawashi wandered on his own in the rubble of his family home in the Al Kaboun suburb before another fleeing family found him and handed him over to rebel fighters, lawyer Stella Constantinou told The Associated Press.

Constantinou said in their haste to escape the fighting, Bushr's father Machhour Al Tawashi and his mother Arin Al Dakkar assumed that the boy was picked up by other members of their extended family who had been staying with them.

But heavy fighting prevented them from going back to search for Bushr once they realized he was missing, Constantinou said.

Believing there was little chance their boy had survived the shelling, his parents and their other two sons aged 4 and 6 arrived in Cyprus on Aug. 6 in search of asylum, up to 15 days after they had lost trace of Bushr.

But word that the boy was safe eventually reached the parents, who now live in the coastal town of Limassol, and they sought Constantinou's help to bring him to this Mediterranean island.

"You can imagine how they felt when they were told their son was alive after bearing all this guilt thinking that he was dead," said Constantinou.

Constantinou said the sister of one of her clients volunteered to go back to Damascus on Sept. 9 to take care of Bushr until arrangements for his return could be made. That woman is now being prevented from leaving the Syrian capital, she said.

The lawyer said the Cypriot Foreign Ministry expedited the process once Bushr's parents provided proof that he was their child. Bushr's father then travelled to Beirut where he was reunited with the boy at the Cypriot Embassy. He brought him back to the island on Thursday.

"All the parents keep saying is 'Thank you! Thank you!'" Constantinou said. "As a grandmother of a two-year-old myself, there's nothing I wouldn't do to get that boy back to his parents."

She added that the parents have been taken aback by all the media attention they have faced.

Activists say some 35,000 people have been killed in Syria since an uprising against President Bashar Assad's government began in March 2011.

US futures fall as US companies post earnings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock futures slipped Thursday as companies including Verizon, Morgan Stanley and Southwest Airlines posted mixed quarterly earnings, and the Labor Department posted the latest numbers on unemployment benefits.

Dow Jones industrial futures fell 9 points to 13,480. The broader S&P futures gave up 4.2 points to hit 1,4590. Nasdaq futures fell 10 points to 2,760.50.

The Labor Department reported that applications for U.S. unemployment benefits jumped 46,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 388,000, the highest in four months. That's way up from last week, however, big shifts for both weeks were heavily influenced by technical factors.

The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose slightly to 365,500, suggesting that modest hiring is ongoing.

Also Thursday, China reported that growth fell to 7.4 percent from 7.6 percent a year ago, the weakest showing since early 2009.

The health of the world's second-largest economy has a big impact on exporting nations, from natural resources in South America, to big machinery makers in the U.S. Slowing growth in China hit Deere shares hard when it cut its revenue estimates two months ago. Shares of Caterpillar edged lower in premarket trading.

However, economists were divided on how to interpret the latest figures. China's worst slump since the global financial crisis, some believe, may at least be leveling out.

Retail sales in China rose 14.4 percent, accelerating from the first half's 14.1 percent growth. Investment in factories and other fixed assets improved, rising 20.5 percent in the first nine months of the year, up from a 20.2 percent rate for the first eight months.

Morgan Stanley rose before the market opened after it beat most expectations for the third quarter. Revenue rose 18 percent to $7.5 billion after excluding one-time charges, topping the $6.4 billion that analysts were expecting.

Shares of Philip Morris headed in the opposite direction as profits fell. Despite higher prices, it's selling fewer cigarettes. Total Marlboro shipments fell 2.3 percent.

The Federal Communications Commission has spent nearly 15 years blocking AT&T from using up some of the spectrum it's been buying up to expand its network. Today, the FCC has approved a compromise proposal submitted to the agency in June by both AT&T and Sirius XM Radio which places guard bands in between the interfering spectrum. With this proposal approved, AT&T can now begin to use the spectrum it's been collecting over the years to support their 4G LTE rollout.
