Portugal's Monster: The Mechanics Of A Massive Wave

YouTube

American surfer Garrett "GMAC" McNamara rides what could be, if confirmed, the biggest wave conquered in history as a crowd watches Monday in Nazare, Portugal.

The photos and video are heart-stopping ? the tiny figure of extreme surfer Garrett McNamara balancing on his board as he slides down what's being billed as a record-breaking, 100-foot wall of water.

Perhaps just as amazing as McNamara's feat Monday is the sight of the monster swell itself rearing up and then exploding onto the rocky coastline in Nazare, Portugal. "In Nazare," the Hawaiian surfer told Time, "the ocean is known as a place of death, not of riding waves."

It's where he set the world record in 2011 for the biggest wave ever surfed and where he married his wife in November.

Nazare's giant waves are generated by factors peculiar to that part of the European coast, says Micah Sklut, forecaster and CEO at Swellinfo.com, a surf forecasting site.

"You get big storms in the North Atlantic in the wintertime that push swells toward Europe," says Sklut, who is himself a surfer.

The sheer size of the wave McNamara rode was triggered by a "massive storm" that day off Ireland, he says. But Nazare's rare undersea geography ? a deep canyon that points like an arrow toward the town ? is what creates the ideal conditions for the kind of waves in the video.

"Normally, what happens is that the open-ocean swells, as they approach the coastline, they're going to be slowed down by the ocean bottom as it gets shallower," Sklut says. "But at Nazare, for example, the ocean swells get focused in this submarine canyon and have much more energy."

At its deepest, the Nazare Canyon is some 16,000 feet from the ocean's surface, according to the Portuguese Hydrographic Office. By contrast, the Grand Canyon in Arizona is about 6,000 feet deep at its lowest point.

"So, first you've got really deep water, and then as it approaches the shore it gets very shallow, and that enables the waves to climb really, really big all of a sudden," Sklut says.

Similar conditions exist in other "big wave" spots ? Teahupoo, Tahiti; the Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii; the Cortes Bank about 100 miles from Los Angeles and Mavericks on Northern California's coast.

Hendrik Tolman, an ocean wave expert at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, compares the canyon's effect to a lens focusing light and says there's "no hard upper limit" to the size that waves can get. He notes there have been observations of waves offshore that were well over 110 feet.

While Tolman agrees that McNamara's wave was "very, very high," he and some other wave experts are circumspect about whether it actually hit 100 feet. Because there was no instrumentation at Nazare to scientifically measure the wave from trough to crest, McNamara and his team are relying on an old surfer's yardstick ? comparing the apparent size of the wave to the size of the people in photos.

"That's not very accurate," Tolman says. "You can see the peak of the wave, but you can't see the bottom of the trough very well."

When it comes to finding and riding such giants, Sklut says two things are key: better wave forecasting and Jet Skis. If you look closely at the video of McNamara or other extreme surfers, you'll often see a Jet Ski peeling away just as a surfer starts a run down the wave face ? a technique known as a "tow-in" that was pioneered by surfer Laird Hamilton and some friends in the early 1990s.

"If you think of a 100-foot wave, breaking in say 100 feet of water, that's a pretty fast wave, which is why you use Jet Skis to get on to them," says Tim Janssen, a surfer who is a physical oceanographer at Theiss Research in La Jolla, Calif.

"Absolutely, 1,000 percent, they would not be riding these waves without a Jet Ski," Sklut says. "These waves are moving so fast and there's so much water that it would be virtually impossible to paddle into a wave like Garrett rode without a Jet Ski."

Then there's the wipeout.

Hamilton has called it "the moment where you totally relinquish any true control over what you're doing."

"There's no place really in life that does it quite like that ? when you do fall and you do get hit by [the water], you're just at the mercy of the wave and it dictates," he said in 2010. "And sometimes those are the most thrilling rides of all. Unfortunately."

Janssen says a wipeout on a wave that size probably feels "exponentially heavier than anything that normal people surf."

Surviving takes training in such things as holding your breath. Surfers such as Hamilton and McNamara can hold it for two minutes plus, Sklut says. When it comes to wiping out in big surf, "you kind of have to let it do what it wants to do and try to relax," he says, though he admits he has never surfed anything close to the really big ones.

"On a personal level, I cannot even relate," Sklut says. "I wouldn't go near that. I don't need that much of a rush."

Fundraising firm charged with gaming violations | TribLIVE

When Michael Schmidt's son brought home tickets to sell for his midget football team last September, Schmidt thought something wasn't right.

?They used scores from professional football games to determine the winner,? said Schmidt, a state police sergeant in Indiana County.

But he thought the biggest problem with the tickets was that the company that produced them, Green Bee Fundraising, kept 40 percent of the proceeds, leaving the Homer City Area Athletic Booster Club with the rest.

?If you run a small game of chance ... all the money has to stay with the nonprofit organization, except for the prizes you pay out and the costs you incur,? Schmidt said.

But now the owner of the Sharon-based fundraising company and one of his employees will face trial in Indiana County for allegedly violating the state's gambling laws.

Their attorney said what Green Bee does is no different than a Publisher's Clearinghouse sweepstakes or the Monopoly game at McDonald's restaurants.

?(They've) never had an issue whatsoever,? attorney Timothy Kidd said about Green Bee. ?They do fundraisers for cerebral palsy, the Knights of Columbus, autistic children, Catholic high school fundraising. They do fundraising for all kinds of groups.?

When Schmidt first saw the tickets, he called officials from the booster club, which has a small games of chance license, to let them know he considered the program illegal. Club members immediately stopped selling the tickets and issued refunds, he said.

No members of the booster club were charged. A booster club official did not return a call for comment.

The tickets, which cost $10 each, advertised weekly prizes of $350 awarded based on the scores of three NFL teams added together, Schmidt said.

Schmidt continued investigating the matter, and in December charged Green Bee owner James Paul Thomas, 70, and an employee, Ronald Leo Bosworth, 40.

Schmidt said as a for-profit company, Green Bee is ineligible for a small games of chance license. And even though the boosters have such a license, a game contingent on football scores is not an approved game.

Kidd said Green Bee has been conducting such fundraising for more than 30 years in 37 states with no problems.

He said there is no purchase necessary to enter the sweepstakes. Rather, the sweepstakes is connected to a discount card, which people actually are purchasing for their $10.

Schmidt said his investigation revealed that the discount cards allow people access to Green Bee's web site, where they can receive discounts to other online retailers.

But he said those discounts are no different than what anyone can receive without the discount card.

In addition, Schmidt said he tried to enter the sweepstakes for free and was denied a free ticket.

?My contention is that they're not selling a discount card, and in fact, if this gambling on football games isn't contingent on it, they aren't going to sell any discount cards for $10 apiece,? Schmidt said.

The company's web site states that while a law enforcement official might take the position that the sweepstakes is gambling, the company maintains the game does not depend on the outcome of any individual game.

At a preliminary hearing earlier this week, Homer City District Judge Susanne Steffee ordered Thomas and Bosworth held for trial.

Kidd said he has a meeting scheduled next month with his clients to determine how they want to proceed. He contends that Schmidt is wrong.

?I think Sgt. Schmidt didn't want to sell tickets for his son's fundraiser,? Kidd said.

Schmidt said he didn't want to sell tickets he considered illegal.

As for Green Bee never facing a legal issue before, he said the reason might be simple.

?They probably never had a trooper's son come home with the tickets,? Schmidt said.

(AP) ? New Orleans police are in the middle of an unprecedented security challenge with an estimated 150,000 Super Bowl fans packing the city during the raucous annual buildup to Mardi Gras, when thousands of revelers flock to the historic French Quarter and its restaurants, bars and strip clubs.

It all began in earnest Friday night with the first of the city's major float-filled Mardi Gras season parades. This week, the parade schedule is on hold while the Super Bowl takes center stage. Mardi Gras preparations resume once Sunday's game is over and the parades roll again starting Wednesday.

The city's police force of 1,200 officers is working more than three weeks' worth of 12-hour days, on the lookout for everything from petty crime and public drunkenness to random gunfire and the threat of terrorism. It will be an exhausting stretch that city officials say will cost the city several million dollars in police overtime.

"If we can, we'd like to give them some time down," said police chief Ronal Serpas. "But if we can't, they know it and they'll stand up for it."

It's also a unique chance for Serpas to show off one of the strengths of a department beset by scandals involving brutality and mismanagement. City officials have carried out numerous reforms aimed at cleaning up the department, which has seen five officers convicted of civil rights violations stemming from deadly shootings of unarmed residents after Hurricane Katrina.

For years, though, crowd control has been the department's bright spot, especially during Mardi Gras revelry on the narrow streets of the nearly 300-year-old French Quarter, home to fancy restaurants and art galleries as well as sleazy bars and strip joints.

"I think the NOPD does take a particular pride in its long-standing history and long-standing demonstration that managing large crowds is something we do very well," said Serpas, who is in his third year running the department.

Shoulder-to-shoulder, alcohol-fueled crowds often spill over into the neighboring Faubourg Marigny, an increasingly popular area of music clubs and restaurants. A 15-block-long stretch of Poydras Street, linking the Superdome to the Mississippi River and the massive Harrah's Casino, is seeing increased foot traffic during sports events with the opening of more bars and restaurants in recent years. And, outside the Quarter, lavish Carnival season parades draw tens of thousands to the miles-long routes. During the final weekend of Mardi Gras, streets of the metro area can be packed with more than a million people, and more than a few will be overdoing it.

"The thing about Mardi Gras crowds is, we get this impression that some of the people may have been drinking," Serpas deadpanned.

Police perched atop horses watch for problems on the horizon and keep people moving, while uniformed officers on foot mingle and build rapport with the partiers to keep the peace. Plainclothes officers will be on the lookout for weapons and other less visible problems. Arrest numbers vary from year to year, though police commonly arrest at least several hundred people each year during Mardi Gras-related celebrations ? most for relatively minor transgressions.

Joining the department's officers for Super Bowl week are more than 200 state troopers and about 100 officers from surrounding local jurisdictions. Also, with the Super Bowl considered a potential terrorist target, there is a beefed-up federal contingent. That includes close to 100 extra FBI personnel supplementing the regular New Orleans FBI staff of 200 agents and support staff, said Michael Anderson, the agent in charge of the New Orleans office.

That office will be home to a joint operations center where the goings-on will be constantly monitored by representatives from all involved state, local and federal law enforcement and security agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Such a center is standard operating procedure for the Super Bowl each year, Anderson said.

New Orleans police will take the lead on local crime, traffic or public disturbances, Anderson said. "If there's any inkling of a terrorist attack or threat of terrorist attack in any way," he said, "then we kick in with our full apparatus."

At Louis Armstrong International Airport, the Transportation Safety Administration is adding personnel and equipment to handle security checks, said TSA spokesman Jon Allen. He said there will be 11 additional checkpoint lanes added to the 14 existing lanes for passenger screening.

Five additional explosives-detecting machines have been added to screen checked baggage, and more than 100 transportation security officers will be brought in from other airports starting Sunday to help local airport staff, Allen said. The officers will stay through the middle of next week, he said.

Beyond the city's police costs, exact security costs are difficult to determine. Federal officials declined to detail specifics, and an NFL representative would say only that the league will spend millions.

Mardi Gras season happens every year, and the city is no stranger to Super Bowls, having hosted nine ? including the 2002 game that followed the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Although security planning for the Super Bowl has grown increasingly complex since the attacks, no acts of terror or other serious problems have been reported at Super Bowls in recent years.

Most Super Bowl problems in recent years resulted from human gridlock. At last year's Super Bowl in Indianapolis, 11 people suffered minor injuries during a free outdoor concert. But officials said otherwise there were few problems.

This year, officers will be prepared to reroute or block vehicle traffic when streets are full of pedestrians. As for terrorism worries, Anderson said preparations include formation of SWAT teams and "hazardous incident teams" ? specialists in hazardous materials or explosives assembled from the various federal local and state agencies.

Serpas welcomes the help, but he said much of the cooperation comes from the partiers themselves ? a diverse crowd that can consist of locals and families picnicking on parade routes and a more adult, heavier-drinking crowd downtown and in the Quarter.

"You look at that parade route, and on any one block there could be 10,000 people and two cops," Serpas said. "How do those two cops stay safe, and how does that crowd stay safe? We're actually working together."

NASA's RASSOR robot shape-shifts to haul lunar soil, help make fuel and water

NASA's RASSOR excavator robot shapeshifts to haul lunar soil, help make fuel and water

NASA believes our return to the Moon could be sustained by extracting water from the lunar soil to produce air and even fuel. But how to get large amounts of that soil without bringing heavy, failure-prone machinery? The agency's RASSOR (pronounced "razor") excavator robot might do the trick. Rather than wield big scoops, it has a pair of arm-mounted drums that can change the robot's profile and dig with far more efficiency than RASSOR's 100-pound weight would usually allow, using one drum as a grip. The robot's sheer flexibility is also key to its working for the estimated five years of NASA's plans: if the crawler ever overturns or gets caught, it can flip over and keep the main treads out of the ground while clearing out soil-related jams. There's enough refinement needed that a RASSOR 2 follow-up should be in testing around early 2014, but the sequel will be close enough to the ideal design that long-term Moon missions could have the little hauler as a passenger.

Ted Cruz Has 'Deep Concerns' With Immigration Reform Deal | TPM ...

Igor Bobic

Newly elected Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said on Monday that he has "deep concerns" with a newly announced bipartisan deal in the Senate to reform the nation's immigration system. Cruz took particular issue with a proposed path to citizenship:

?I appreciate the good work that senators in both parties have put into trying to fix our broken immigration system," said Cruz in a statement. "There are some good elements in this proposal, especially increasing the resources and manpower to secure our border and also improving and streamlining legal immigration. However, I have deep concerns with the proposed path to citizenship.?To allow those who came here illegally to be placed on such a path is both inconsistent with rule of law and profoundly unfair to the millions of legal immigrants who waited years, if not decades, to come to America legally.?

Children's magazine promotes adult video games

LONDON (Reuters) - A British magazine distributed by a joint venture of Conde Nast and Hearst Corporation and aimed at primary school children has been featuring images of adult-rated video games.

The most recent issue of Cool Kidz, which is published by privately-owned LCD Publishing, contained images of five games that carried age ratings of 18 years, under the European gaming industry's PEGI rating scheme.

Screenshots appeared as double-page spreads, for use as posters, and were reproduced in spot-the-difference and other puzzles. Earlier issues also had images from 18- and 16-rated games.

Children's campaigners said the images reflected a growing problem of young children being exposed to violent video games, thereby increasing the chance they start playing them earlier.

It also highlighted what some critics describe as an apparent gap in regulation of children's magazines since LCD does not appear to have broken any law or industry rule.

LCD Publishing, which is based in Exeter, southwest England, said it took its responsibilities to young readers seriously.

"We censor the images we use to ensure that there is no blood or apparent body damage," owner Allen Trump said in an emailed statement.

He said the images used were suitable for children 12 or older, although he added the magazine was targeted at children up to 12 years.

The pictures printed depicted life-like computer generated images of men carrying weapons including assault rifles, Bowie knives, an axe, an anti-tank weapon and pistols.

The images showed explosions but not the visceral, bloody combat or scenes of a sexual nature for which the games are frequently criticized by parents' groups and women's rights advocates.

Cool Kidz is distributed by Comag, which is controlled by privately-owned U.S. magazine publishers Conde Nast, owners of Vogue magazine, and the Hearst Corporation, owner of Cosmopolitan magazine.

All three groups declined repeated requests for comment.

London-based Comag is one of the largest magazine distributors in the UK with annual turnover of around 230 million pounds ($360 million), according to its most recent accounts.

FREE PROMOTION

Trump said LCD downloaded the game images from the Internet although he was also occasionally approached by public relations firms seeking coverage of their clients' games.

Games publishers regularly post images on their websites, for use by online and print publishers, thus helping create awareness of their game.

Games firms contacted by Reuters said they were unaware Cool Kidz, which has been published for seven years, had been using their images.

The adult games Cool Kidz featured included Hitman: Absolution, Call of Duty Black Ops II, Assassins Creed III, Farcry 3 and Dishonored.

Representatives for Japan's Square Enix, publisher of the Hitman series, privately-owned Bethesda Softworks, publisher of Dishonored, and Ubisoft Entertainment, publisher of Assassins Creed III and Farcry 3, said they opposed the use but declined to say whether they would take any legal action against LCD.

Call of Duty publisher Activision declined to comment.

Alison Sherratt, senior vice-president of teachers union ATL, said publishers and government needed to do more to limit children's' exposure to games.

"It puts peer pressure on children .. If they see these images, it gives them the idea it's ok, it's all right to play these games," she added.

A spokeswoman for the Advertising Standards Authority said games companies could not advertise 18 rated games in children's magazines and a spokesman for the Video Standards Council (VSC), the UK affiliate of PEGI, said its rules also prohibited this.

However, since the images were not paid-for advertising, or supplied to Cool Kidz by the games publishers, these rules do not apply.

The Press Complaints Commission can adjudicate on complaints against magazines but only in respect of its members. LCD is not one.

The Office of Fair Trade and the Professional Publishers Association, trade group for magazine publishers, said they were unaware of any bodies that had regulatory powers over the content of children's magazines.

Organize a Workplace Money Lunch to Create and Reinforce Good Financial Habits

Organize a Workplace Money Lunch to Create and Reinforce Good Financial HabitsWhen you're on a tight budget going out to eat daily at work can be a huge unnecessary experience. Fight this by organizing "Money Lunches" where coworkers can gather together to eat brown bag lunches, discuss their finances, and build good money habits.

Finance weblog Main Street writer Erin Frank first came together for money lunches after joking about how they were broke most of the time. She and a few coworkers started to gather in a conference room so they could socialize while eating lunches brought from home and share their current financial reality and their goals for the future. Part lunch-club and part support group these money lunches provided a forum to discuss how to eliminate debt and save for a rainy day in addition to giving each other reality checks when tempted to blow their financial progress on a new car or iPad. Erin credits these money lunches for helping her to kill $35,000 in debt over a few years on her $27,000 salary in New York City.

You may not be comfortable sharing all of your financial details with coworkers but having a way to be social while bringing your lunch and having a forum to discuss rough finances can be helpful to anyone who is taking time for austerity now to plan for their financial future. Kenya elections observers to enhance transparency

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Kenya's first nation-wide vote since devastating violence broke out after the nation's 2007 presidential election will be closely monitored by the international community and local observers to help ward off potential problems, officials said Monday.

The disputed 2007 presidential election sparked off ethnic fighting that killed more than 1,000 people, and observers warn there is an unacceptably high risk of repeat violence around Kenya's March 4 vote. A chaotic primary vote this month and outbreaks of deadly violence around the country have done little to instill confidence that peace will prevail.

Kenya's election commission says at least 1,014 international observers and more than 10,000 local observers have been accredited. The United States said it will field a team of about 105 observers.

"We hope our ongoing engagement on electoral preparations combined with the presence of election observers from the U.S. government, international partners, and Kenyan groups before and during the election will help ensure that the electoral process is free, fair and peaceful, thereby giving the Kenyan people confidence in the legitimacy of election results," U.S. Embassy spokesman Christopher Snipes said.

The U.S. is encouraging Kenyans to put aside tribal and ethnic differences, reject intimidation and violence, demand an end to impunity and to address any electoral disputes through Kenya's courts, rather than on the streets, Snipes said.

The European Union observer team will be smaller in number than in 2007 ? 70, down from 132 ? but will spend more time in the country analyzing the buildup to the vote, said Gillian McCormack, deputy head of the EU observer mission.

Kenya has introduced political reforms to address the flawed 2007 polls. A new constitution passed in August 2010 has put checks and balances on government bodies. The constitution also established a robust Supreme Court and initiated judicial reforms that have resulted in more than a dozen higher court judges being fired over lack of integrity.

A report this month by the Council on Foreign Relations listed several reasons to fear violence might reoccur: the country's top presidential candidates are mobilizing voters along ethnic lines; the vote is likely to be very close; the election commission will be unable to fully prepare for the election; and one presidential candidate faces trial at the International Criminal Court for violence perpetrated after the 2007 vote.

"The United States and others may have limited leverage over Kenya's domestic politics, but they are not without options that would significantly improve the prospects for acceptable elections and help avert a major crisis," the report said. "However, with little more than two months before the elections, Washington must intensify its engagement or forsake its opportunity to make a difference."

The U.S. is financially supporting observers from the Carter Center ? run by former President Jimmy Carter ? and the largest Kenyan group of observers, said Snipes.

The International Crisis Group said in a recent report that high youth unemployment and inequality encourage the growth of criminal groups and militias who want to intimidate political opponents.

Brooklyn Dolphin Removed From Gowanus Canal, Sent For Necropsy

By Jonathan Allen
NEW YORK, Jan 26 (Reuters) - The carcass of a dolphin that died after becoming mired in a notoriously toxic New York City canal has been removed and will be sent for a necropsy, a marine research group said on Saturday.
The animal, a common dolphin, was first spotted in Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal on Friday morning, where it was described as looking disoriented and unwell as it struggled to avoid getting bogged down in the canal's muddy floor.
Biologists from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, who monitored the dolphin with police and a crowd of onlookers, hoped the animal might be able to free itself and head back out to the harbor as waters rose. It died Friday evening before high tide.
"The option that gave the animal the best chance for a positive outcome was waiting," Robert DiGiovanni, Riverhead's executive director and senior biologist, said on Saturday. "If an animal wasn't going to be able to survive through the next tide cycle then it was an animal that was compromised and wouldn't make it."
Approaching the dolphin by boat would have been difficult in the shallow, polluted canal and may have achieved little besides adding to the animal's distress, he said.
A necropsy will be performed on the adult dolphin, estimated to weigh about 200 pounds, on Sunday at Riverhead's laboratory on Long Island, he said. The findings and tissue samples will be shared with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Common dolphins are social animals that travel in groups known as pods. To see a solitary common dolphin, especially so far inland, is unusual, and is a sign that the animal is sick or dying, biologists and other marine officials said.
The dolphin's unusual trek into Brooklyn - DiGiovanni could not recall a dolphin coming so far into New York City in at least two decades - brought wide attention to one of the city's dirtier and most malodorous corners.
The Environmental Protection Agency declared the Gowanus Canal a Superfund site in 2010, calling it one of the country's "most extensively contaminated water bodies." Mayor Michael Bloomberg had opposed the designation, arguing the city's own plan would have cleaned the canal in less time.
The canal is laced with heavy metals, coal tar wastes and other pollutants from the factories and tanneries that have lined its banks, the EPA says.
The EPA is still working on its plan, which is currently open to public comment, to spend an estimated $300 million to $400 million of federal money to clean up the canal. (Editing by Paul Thomasch and Doina Chiacu)

Enhance Your Future With Our Personal Finance Tips - ProjectPB ...

It is important to budget and track your income and expenses before making major purchases like cars, vacations and a home. Read this article for useful tips to better manage your personal finances.

Having a higher credit score can get your further when trying to apply for a loan. There are a couple of ways to do this. You can either take out a small personal loan and repay it on an accelerated schedule, or open a couple of credit cards and build an excellent payment history. It is also important to cover more than just the minimum on all possible bills.

Use your annual tax refund to make an extra payment on any outstanding loans or credit card debt. A lot of people buy unimportant things with their refund, instead of working on the amounts they already owe. Unfortunately, the money is spent quickly and the debt still remains.

If you?re looking to have good personal finances you have to avoid getting too many credit lines taken out. Once you are overextended with too many credit lines, your credit rating may go down and you may end up paying higher annual interest rates.

Saving money for an account is important for managing your finances. A savings account is a great place to store money for buying a major appliance or to take a vacation. Consider a variety of retirement plans and find out if the company you work for offers any type of retirement incentives or savings. If your expenses are less than your income, you should be able to save money every month.

Next time you?re at the supermarket, stock up on store brands rather than choosing the more expensive name brand items. Much of the time, you cannot tell the difference. The two products? lists of ingredients are often identical. You can stretch your food budget a lot further by using generics, so go ahead and give them a try.

TIP! A savings account full of liquid assets is a boon to anyone. Although interest rates are relatively low on straight savings accounts, it is still important to search around for the highest interest rate on a savings account that you can find.

Understand your priorities when it comes to money. Once you understand your thoughts about money, you can aim to improve your current financial situation. Analyse your perspective on material possessions and write down some thoughts on your attitude toward money. See if they are related to events in your past. This will enable you to tackle your financial future more successfully.

Establish an emergency fund through automatic deductions from your paycheck. If you have the money automatically transferred to a savings account, you won?t miss it. Building a little savings will help out in the case of illness or unemployment.

Younger people looking to stay out in front of their finances would do well to discover the wonders of compounding interest. Save your money in an account where you will make money off of the interest that you earn as well as your initial investment.

Work out a budget, and stick to it. You may assume you are spending your money wisely, but there is a chance that you?re spending beyond your means. Make a note of each purchase, whether small or large. Read over all of it near the end of the month. This way you will know what needs trimming.

TIP! Avoiding debt wherever possible is a simple and powerful guideline for keeping personal finances under control. A home loan or car is fine because those are important things you need.

Check over your bank statement every month. This way you can keep track of the rates and fees. Your bank might raise your fees without notifying you and keep billing you for services you do not need. Because of this, you should look over each statement with care.

As just mentioned, if you take care of your personal finances now, you will be able to save for more expensive purchases in the future. The advice in this article can help you to be educated about your money and how to make wise decisions.

Analysis: Obama climate push to benefit energy efficiency firms

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's promise to attack climate change is likely to light a fire under federal agencies slow to comply with a mandate to cut energy use - which could be very good news for companies that specialize in systems that save power.

Waiting in the wings are the likes of Honeywell International Inc, Johnson Controls Inc and Ameresco Inc that are ready to carry out heating and cooling system upgrades, lighting retrofits and similar projects in some of the government's 500,000 buildings.

Efficiency projects, according to many, are a key way the government can reduce its own energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions without seeking additional funds from Congress.

Many of these projects are implemented under so-called energy savings performance contracts in which a company develops, installs and arranges financing for improvements to boost energy efficiency and lower costs. The energy service company guarantees the project's energy savings and services are repaid through those savings.

In late 2009, Obama mandated that federal agencies make significant reductions in energy consumption. The aim was for the government to "lead by example" by upgrading many of its facilities. Two years later, the administration tried to jumpstart that work by setting a goal for federal agencies to enter into at least $2 billion of energy efficiency projects within two years.

"There is a lot more potential in the program than what's been done today," said Adam Procell, executive vice president at Lime Energy Co, which works with larger companies such as Johnson Controls to design and install energy efficiency projects for federal customers.

With Obama renewing his commitment to combat climate change in his second inaugural address this week, some expect to see more pressure on agencies to get going on those projects.

"If President Obama was to let all of his administrators know that this was an important priority of his, you could see reacceleration of this market in a relatively short period of time," said Wedbush Securities analyst Craig Irwin, who follows energy efficiency companies.

$2 BILLION GOAL

With less than a year left to reach the $2 billion goal, major efficiency companies have been working to develop project proposals and expect a string of contracts to be awarded this year.

"In the last six months, federal government activity has heated up," Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions, said in an interview. "That's going to step up as the year goes on."

In October, Honeywell won an $80.6 million project to improve energy efficiency at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, the largest such project ever awarded by the federal government, according to Orzeske. Most such projects are in the $10 million to $15 million range, he added.

The upgrades are expected to save more than $170 million over 20 years, guaranteed by Honeywell through the contract.

Other energy service companies poised to benefit from federal project awards include Ameresco and United Technologies Corp's Noresco unit, both of which have been active in the federal market in recent years. Other companies that have done federal projects in the past include Clark Energy Group LLC, Siemens AG and Schneider Electric SA.

The U.S. market for energy efficiency and services topped $5.1 billion in 2011, according to Pike Research, and is expected to reach $16 billion in sales by 2020. The market is dominated by municipal, university, school and hospital projects, but demand from federal agencies has increased because of the Obama administration's mandate and economic stimulus programs, the report said.

Johnson Controls Building Efficiency's vice president of government relations, Mark Wagner, said the government has not yet addressed what will happen once it meets its $2 billion goal, but he was encouraged by Obama's renewed pledge to address climate change.

"The budget is going to be tight in the federal government for the foreseeable future," Wagner said. "If government agencies want to make their facilities more efficient, performance contracting is the way to address their needs and to address climate change."

Johnson Controls won a $16 million contract in late 2011 to put in a solar energy installation and make other efficiency improvements at Fort Bliss, the nation's largest military installation.

Smaller companies that supply equipment or software to the project developers could also see a boost from federal projects, according to Aditya Ranade, who leads the sustainable building materials team at technology research firm Lux Research.

Specifically, Ranade called out LED and lighting systems companies Acuity Brands Inc and Digital Lumens and Optimum Energy LLC, which uses software and cloud computing to optimize heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, as companies that could see a boost in orders from federal contracts.

Acuity Brands' stock is already up 2.4 percent since Obama's speech on Monday and Ameresco's shares have gained about 3 percent.

Greek subway workers end strike after arrest threat

ATHENS (Reuters) - Striking Greek subway workers trickled back to work on Friday after the government threatened them with arrest, ending a nine-day walkout that paralyzed public transport in Athens.

The showdown had turned into the latest test for Greece's fragile three-party ruling coalition as it faces down unions to try to implement austerity measures demanded by foreign lenders as the price for bailout funds.

Traffic slowly resumed on Athens' subway lines on Friday afternoon after workers protesting wage cuts were served orders to return to work or face jail, the first time the government has invoked such legislation since it took power in June.

"The workers who were handed the notice didn't have a choice. We are exploring legal options," said Manthos Tsakos, general secretary of the main subway workers' union.

Earlier on Friday, police forced their way through a metal gate at a train depot in Athens to break up an overnight sit-in by 90 transport workers against wage cuts. Scuffles broke out and at least three people were detained before being released.

The radical leftist opposition Syriza party, which is leading in some opinion polls, said the police intervention was a "barbaric" attack on workers' rights.

Eager to show lenders and Greeks that it is determined to implement promised reforms, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has taken a hard line on the strikers despite facing criticism from one of his own coalition partners.

"Under no circumstances can the government allow the country to be derailed and to let the sacrifices of the Greek people go to waste," Development Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, who oversees transport issues, said in a televised statement.

Other transport unions held strikes in solidarity with subway workers on Friday, leaving Athens without bus, tram, trolleybus or rail services, and causing gridlock across the city.

Traffic ground to a halt in the capital, fuelling public anger against the strike which affected more than a million commuters in a city of 5 million people.

"HARD TO HAVE SYMPATHY"

"This week has been hell. How can they expect people to be on their side when they do this to us? We're all suffering (from austerity) but it's very difficult to have any sympathy for them," said 50-year-old Dionisis Kefalas.

Other commuters, worn down by years of frequent strikes and exasperated by the long wait for a taxi to work, agreed.

"Ordinary people are being inconvenienced - as if our problems weren't bad enough," said Daphne Kiritsi, 46, an office clerk, who said she had paid 200 euros out of her 800-euro monthly salary for taxis this week.

Subway employees oppose being included in a unified wage scheme for public sector workers drawn up under an austerity program that would slash their salaries.

Under the emergency law invoked, which is meant to be used in times of war, natural disaster or risks to public health, workers can be arrested and jailed for up to five years.

Subway, shipyard and other public sector workers planned to march on Friday to parliament in Syntagma Square, the scene of often violent protests in recent years.

The most powerful unions threw their support behind the subway workers.

"The workers' struggle will continue until justice is had," said Nikos Kioutsoukis, general secretary of the GSEE private sector union, which has called a 24-hour strike against austerity measures next month.

Ultimate Ears intros Vocal Reference Monitors to save singers from strain

Believe it or not, few musicians' in-ear reference monitors are tuned to emphasize voice; singers might have to compete for attention with wailing guitars and drums inside their own heads. Rather than risk artists shouting themselves hoarse, Ultimate Ears has launched its Vocal Reference Monitors. Separate versions for men and women focus on their typical vocal ranges and narrow the frequency range to between 90Hz and 8kHz, cutting out the more extreme sounds of instruments in the mix. The $999 price rules out the Vocal line for most garage bands -- it might, however, be perfect for pros whose screaming isn't part of the act.

Logitech Introduces First In-Ear Monitor Custom Tuned for Vocalists

The New Ultimate Ears Vocal Reference Monitors are Designed to Deliver the Vocal Response Singers Need

NEWARK, Calif. - Jan. 23, 2013 - Today at The NAMM Show in Anaheim, Calif., Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI) unveiled the first custom in-ear monitors engineered specifically for vocalists - the Ultimate Ears[TM] Vocal Reference Monitors. This new monitor is the first-ever custom in-ear monitor that focuses only on the vocal spectrum.

The Ultimate Ears Vocal Reference Monitors have been designed with two different sound signatures to accommodate male and female voice frequencies. These unique signatures allow singers to concentrate only on what they need to hear.

"Most concert attendees don't realize just how loud it is on stage," said Philippe Depallens, vice president and general manager of the Ultimate Ears custom line of products. "Often, singers exhaust their voices in an effort just to hear themselves above the instruments and amplifiers. It puts a tremendous strain on their voice."

The Ultimate Ears Vocal Reference Monitors address this problem in two ways. First, they act as an earplug and reduce overall stage volume by up to 26 decibels through passive noise cancellation. This brings the sound pressure levels down so that vocalists can hear their own voice more clearly. Second, instead of hearing a full frequency mix like most other monitors, the three balanced armatures in each ear are engineered to emphasize the general voice band, with frequency response between 90Hz - 8kHz, so that singers can hear what's most important to their performance.

Additionally, the Ultimate Ears Vocal Reference Monitors will be equipped with RewardTag. If your Ultimate Ears Vocal Reference Monitors are lost or stolen, whoever finds your device can return it through RewardTag, and Ultimate Ears will give the individual a reward for their safe return.

Pricing and Availability

Both versions of the Ultimate Ears Vocal Reference Monitors are available directly through Ultimate Ears or through any authorized dealer. The retail price is $999.00. For more information please visit www.ultimateears.com.

Indictment: Credit Counseling Firm Laundered Cash From ...

marijuanaTwo people have been charged with laundering cash from marijuana trafficking through a non-profit credit counseling agency in Kansas City, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.

Mendy Read-Forbes, 37, Platte City, Mo., and Laura Shoop, 46, Platte City, Mo., are charged in a superseding indictment with one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana. In addition, Read-Forbes is charged with 16 counts of money laundering and Shoop is charged with eight counts of money laundering.

The indictment alleges that Forbes and Newhard Credit Solutions was registered as a nonprofit organization that provided credit counseling services to people who were in bankruptcy proceedings. Forbes held herself out as the owner and operator of the agency. Shoop was an acquaintance of Forbes who worked at various times for the agency.

In March and April 2012, Forbes was introduced to an undercover officer posing as a marijuana dealer. Forbes offered to devise a scheme to launder the dealer?s drug proceeds. As part of the scheme, Forbes offered to deposit money given to her by the drug dealer into the bank accounts of Forbes and Newhard Credit Solutions or related companies and then to return the money to the dealer via checks, money orders or wire transfers. The bank accounts were in Kansas.

To make the transactions appear legitimate, Forbes gave the drug dealer a contract titled ?Purchase and Sale of Business Agreement.? The contract, bearing the signature of the drug dealer and another person known to the grand jury, made it appear that the marijuana dealer was purchasing assets of FCP, Inc., a corporation controlled by Forbes and another person.

To make it appear that the drug dealer was engaged in business as a certified credit counselor with Forbes and Newhard Credit Solutions, Forbes gave the drug dealer a certificate saying he had completed training as a bankruptcy specialist.

In addition, Forbes created a company called Maximum Lawn Care, LLC, and opened bank accounts where cash from the drug dealer was deposited.

Forbes agreed not to charge a fee for laundering the drug dealer?s money until she had laundered $170,000 so that the dealer could use the funds to purchase more marijuana. Forbes also agreed to let the drug dealer store 40 pounds of marijuana at her house.

If convicted, they face a maximum penalty of 20 years and a fine up to $250,000 on the charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering and each of the money laundering counts; and a maximum penalty of five years and a fine up to $250,000 on each of the two marijuana counts.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Housing and Urban Development investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Oakley and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jabari Wamble are prosecuting.

Costa initially was charged in a criminal complaint filed Jan. 17 in U.S. District Court in Wichita. The complaint alleged that on Jan. 9 the Wichita Police Department was called to a report of shots fired at the McDonald?s restaurant at 6350 W. Kellogg in Wichita. The victims reported that the disturbance had begun when another car tried to cut in front of them in the drive thru. They said a male in the other car had stepped out of the vehicle and fired a shotgun at them. The blast struck the post between the driver?s side front and back doors of the victims? car.

While investigating the case, Wichita police officers served a search warrant at 2440 Newell in Wichita. Costa was arrested and police recovered a Mossberg pump action shotgun from a crawl space next to Costa?s bed. Costa denied shooting the gun at McDonald?s.

Because had a prior felony conviction on a charge of aggravated assault in 2011 he was prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Treaster is prosecuting.
